The Alumni Band Organization (ABO) of William & Mary was founded in 1986 as a special interest alumni group and a support group for the current band program. The Alumni Association Board of Directors, as of January 1, 1994, officially granted the ABO constituent status. This group is dedicated to preserving alumni connections with the College Band program. This group is composed of William & Mary alumni and faculty who participated in or were affiliated with the band program during their time at the College. Those who are affiliates include majorettes and flag team members and band leaders.
The ABO remains active by hosting receptions after concerts, responding to the needs of the band director, continuing homecoming performances and activities, and providing important service to the William & Mary Alumni Association. To support outstanding band members the ABO started the Charles R. Varner Scholarship Endowment, which has been awarded. It was named for Charles Varner to show appreciation for his contributions to the William & Mary band and to provide assistance to promising young musicians in furthering their education at the College.1
