Obituary Announcement

From a Faculty and Staff Announcement Email from Provost Michael Halleran on February 21, 2012:

"Dear William & Mary Community,

I write with great sadness to share the news that Charles Koch, Dudley W. Woodbridge Professor of Law, died Saturday, February 18, 2012. Professor Koch was a member of the faculty of the William & Mary Law School for over thirty years. While Professor Koch focused primarily on U.S. administrative law, he began learning and teaching about the European Union because he realized its growing importance both in the U.S., in the global legal environment, and ultimately to domestic law.

Professor Koch received his B.A. from University of Maryland, his J.D. from George Washington University and his LL.M. from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the faculty at William & Mary in 1979, he worked as a staff attorney in the Office of the General Counsel of the Federal Trade Commission and taught at DePaul University's College of Law. He served as Assistant Chief Reporter of the Administrative Law of the European Union Project of the American Bar Association and was past president of the Committee on Sections and Annual Meetings of the Administrative Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools. Professor Koch was a member of the United Nations Affairs Coordinating Committee of the American Bar Association. He also served for seven years as Editor-in-Chief of the Administrative Law Review and twice acted as a consultant to the Administrative Conference of the United States. Professor Koch was a prolific writer, publishing books for both teaching and practice, and numerous articles in law reviews and practitioner-oriented journals. He frequently lectured on administrative law and related topics to academics, practitioners and federal and state judges.

Professor Koch is survived by his wife, Denise, and his son, Andrew; his sisters, Clara Claeys and Barbara Rader; and his brother, Carl Koch.

A celebration of Professor Koch's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25th, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. A reception will follow at the Kingspoint Clubhouse, 119 Northpoint Drive. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Charles H. Koch Memorial Fund for International Studies, William & Mary Law School, P.O. Box 3527, Williamsburg, VA 23187. Online condolences may be offered at www.nelsencares.com."
