The Student Assembly is the student's government at William & Mary. Including both graduates and undergraduates, it represents the students' voice to the faculty, administration, community and state. It also provides services to the college community, acting as the sponsor and coordinator for several student activities and projects both on and off campus. The Student Assembly consists of different branches, including the Executive Council which is divided into seven departments, the Review Board, the Senate, and the Elections Commission. These branches assist the student in both their academic endeavors and in pursuing wider campus and community relations.
Additional information about the current Student Assembly is available at the Student Assembly website.
History
Prior to 1993, there were separate student government associations for undergraduate and graduate students at William & Mary. In October 1993, President Timothy J. Sullivan created the Commission on Student Governance(CSG), whose purpose was to "examine the College's system of self-governance." (Office of the President. Timothy J. Sullivan Records, Acc. 1996.024, The Flat Hat, November 5, 1993, pg. 2 at 1) Between 1993-1994, the Commission met with 22 focus groups to survey the kind of government students wanted to form. In the spring of 1995, students voted to create the new Student Assembly, and Jonas Geissler was elected its first president. (Alumni Gazette, June 1995, pg. 13-14 at 2)
