Since the first Homecoming at William & Mary on October 23, 1926, the Alumni Association has hosted the annual reunion for generations of William & Mary alumni, students, family, and friends. Homecoming soon replaced Commencement as the primary alumni gathering each year at William & Mary.

The first Homecoming football game was played against George Washington University with William & Mary victorious, winning 14-0 at old Cary Field.

Parade

The first parade along Duke of Gloucester Street was held in 1929. The first float during the William & Mary's first Homecoming parade depicts the Rev. James Blair receiving the Royal Charter from King William III and Queen Mary II, 1929. (See P1977.106 in the University Archives Photograph Collection, Special Collections Research Center, Earl Gregg Swem Library, William & Mary.) Floats by student groups, the mascot, alumni, and other groups generally participate in the modern parade.

Stories in Campus Publications

The Flat Hat (FH) is the student newspaper of William & Mary. Back issues are available online from Swem Library via the William & Mary Digital Archive. The back issues are unfortunately not fully searchable, but can be browsed by date. The Alumni Gazette is presently available in Swem Library on microfilm or in paper form in the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) in Swem Library. Until the early 2000s, staff indexed The Flat Hat as well as the Alumni Gazette (AG) and the William & Mary News (WMN) by subject and by personal name. This index is available as a card file in the SCRC.

A note about the contents of this site

This website contains the best available information from known sources at the time it was written. Unfortunately, many of the early original records of William & Mary were destroyed by fires, military occupation, and the normal effects of time. The information in this website is not complete, and it changes as we continue to research and uncover new sources.
